What Is DDR5?

In the introduction, we established that DDR5 is a type of RAM. RAM stands for Random-Access Memory.
What is its purpose? This is the short-term memory of your PC, i.e., it stores relatively small amounts of important data that the CPU or GPU needs to be able to access quickly in order to run the programs on the PC.
Additionally, RAM is extremely fast, but it is also a type of volatile memory, which means that it can only store information when it is powered up. Since RAM is erased by turning off the power, it should be obvious why it can’t be used as a long-term storage medium.
Now, what about DDR5, specifically?
Double Data Rate 5 Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory is DDR5 SDRAM. The SDRAM was developed in 1992, whereas DDR is a type of SDRAM developed in 1998. Its primary strength is its high data rate.
DDR memory technology has evolved over the years and it is mainly linear from DDR (or DDR1) to DDR5, although low-power versions of DDR memory (LPDDR) have also been released, including LPDDR5, which are aimed at mobile devices.

What is the difference between DDR5 and DDR4?
DDR5 offers three major advantages over DDR4: bandwidth, capacity, and power efficiency.

Should You Buy DDR5?

How important is performance to you? DDR5 will offer improved performance over its predecessor, no doubt, if this is your top priority. Nevertheless, don’t expect it to be a huge improvement.
In practice, DDR4 offered limited performance improvements compared to DDR3 when it first launched, so it’s mainly going to be professionals who will be able to take full advantage of DDR5 early on.
Don’t hold your breath if you’re more concerned with affordability and value. With the potential supply issues, DDR5 is bound to be fairly expensive at launch.
